If you've used Speakable for a while, you know we've had a rubric builder for some time. You also probably know it lived three clicks deep inside the activity builder, and getting a rubric setup took more patience than it should have. So, we rebuilt it.
What changed

Why we did this
Rubrics are the foundation of your auto-grading. If they're hard to build, hard to find, and hard to reuse, the rest of the workflow gets harder too. Pulling the Rubric Builder out of the activity flow and giving it a chat-based editing model fixes the two things we;ve heard a lot: "I can never find my rubrics," and "editing it takes way too long"
Three ways to start a rubric
- Create with AI. Type "WIDA speaking rubric, level 2, four criteria" and you're 90 percent there.
- Upload a document. Drop in a PDF, can-do list, or unit plan. The builder pulls criteria out for you.
- Start from scratch. Build it manually, criterion by criterion, when you want full control.
Refine by chatting, not clicking
Instead of a settings panel, you adjust the rubric the way you'd ask a colleague. Each ask live updates the rubric.
Preview the score before students do
Drop in a sample student response and the AI grades it against your rubric, criterion by criterion. If it scores harder or softer than you would, tweak descriptors and run it again. By the time you publish, the rubric grades the way you grade.
Manage rubrics from one place
Create, edit, preview, and reuse rubrics directly from your library. You can also set a default rubric so new activities use it automatically.
Available now on all Speakable teacher accounts.
Open your Speakable, hit Create Rubric, and the redesigned builder is waiting. Existing rubrics carry over, no migration needed.
